A little over a year ago, Hong Kong was abuzz with what would become of the historic Police Married Quarters on Aberdeen Street. Now celebrating its first anniversary, the venue – a historic collection of buildings in a prime spot just off Hollywood Road, has been an unqualified success. At the heart of the project is Jenn Wong and Jason Atherton’s venture, Aberdeen Street Social, a british gastropub-of-sorts with a real emphasis on quality.
Housed in a beautiful mid-century building and (almost) boasting what no other venue in the neighborhood can – a lawn – Aberdeen St has quickly become one of Soho’s go-to bar and restaurants. Taking over two floors, with a terrace and spacious bar on the ground floor and a slightly more formal upstairs, which also boasts a wide, gloriously airy balcony, it is a perfect place to stop off before dinner, eat or swing by for a relaxed, friendly post-dinner drink. Designed by the Shanghai-based, award-winning Neri & Hu, it is at once welcoming and engaging as a venue.
The food is innovative, modern British, dispelling any outmoded stereotypes about British cuisine, and the cocktails wide-ranging, although there is a nod to Atherton’s heritage and the general British vibe with the Bloody English, a variant of the popular brunch drink, albeit with gin, tomato juice, ‘Full English’ spice mix, lemon and Bristol cream sherry -- garnished with egg on toast, while the “‘Come Rye With Me’ boasts a cosmopolitan heritage, mixing Michters Rye with Amaro Montenegro, fresh espresso and Sprite.
