About Silk and Grain
The ageing of cocktails has been a growing trend for a while now. Silk and Grain, a new bar and restaurant round the corner from Bank tube, specialises in drinks which have been conditioned in this way: barrel ageing and leather ageing are the order of the day, the focus of the menu rather than the novelty option. The split level space is handsome and airy, with a double-height bar area with booth seating, rams’ heads and a stylish tin ceiling. From the compact drinks list, we enjoyed the Bloody Moira – named for London’s first female Beefeater apparently – a blend of barrel aged vodka, leather conditioned Dalwhinnie, beetroot, tomato, beef broth, and spices, it had pleasing savoury undernotes. The Carney’s Brew, a mix of bourbon, house-made ginger syrup, lemon, Innis & Gunn oak aged beer, was a smooth brew while the Aged Hanky Panky, a blend of Tanqueray, Martini Rosso and Fernet Branca aged in a barrel, showed most evidence of the ageing process, a layered, almost smoky drink. We particularly liked the Queen of Cornhill – which mixed tequila with leather conditioned Dalwhinnie, agave syrup, absinthe, Dr. Elmegirab’s Spanish Bitters, and a splash of sparkling wine. The list of bar snacks was serviceable without being overly memorable and the main food menu is fairly steak-heavy. A cheese and meat board was the best bet, though we’d have appreciated being told a bit about which cheese was which. That said service was very friendly, and the drinks are well worth returning for – and very reasonably priced given the City location.
