The original China Club was something of an institution, a Parisian cocktail bar of the highest order; but, as with so many good things, the blush started to fade and its spark waned. Now, renamed and having been given a slight scrub and polish but otherwise largely unchanged, the bar has been reborn.

Located behind the Bastille, the cocktail lounge retains its romantic vibe with decor that exudes a colonial chic; the black lacquer accented with splashes of red intended to recall the Shanghai of the 1930s. There are lots of leather couches which just invite reclining, and the low lighting makes for a moody, romantic ambience it's the perfect place to go for a date.

Though the fusion food served in the in-house dining room is slightly pedestrian and not really worth bothering in a city where there's so much great food on offer, the drinks are a different story: cocktails are slickly made and well-presented, and a mix of the classics and signature, house-designed drinks. Try a bourbon-based Cappone, or the Cointreaupolitan by China, though we'd also be very tempted by the quirky sounding Balsimico Rosso, which includes balsamic vinegar as one of its ingredients. There's also a very good range of alcohol free cocktails should you be on the wagon, and a decent selection of wine if you're not. The atmospheric candle-lit bar area is ideal for a glamorous start to your evening and, if you wish to make your night complete, you could always slip to downstairs club for a spot of slow dancing to the live band.
