About Trick Dog
The much anticipated and much delayed - Trick Dog, located somewhat out of the way of things in the area known as Mission Flats, boasts a cocktail menu styled around the pantone colour wheel. It sounds a little bit gimmicky but the drinks have been created with thought and care. The work of Josh Harris and Scott Baird, the cocktail consultants otherwise known as The Bon Vivants, the drinks are things of real beauty, balanced and complex creations. The Baby Turtle is laced with cinnamon and grapefruit, while the Straw Hat blends chestnut honey, rosemary and cider. Intriguing ingredients like olive oil-infused gin and coconut vinegar also feature on the menu and there's a small selection of wines and beers available too. The space is somewhat cavernous, with exposed metal beams and a cement floor, the acoustics aren't always great, but the vast windows keep it light and bright. The first floor is dominated by a big bar alongside one wall with a few tables scattered about the place and plenty of room for standing. The opposite is true of the upstairs space, which is more suited to sitting and lingering over a drink. The food menu is also worthy of exploration, with tempting snacks like beer-candied nuts alongside more substantial (and meaty) fare. Their version of the bar snack du jour, the Scotch Egg, is a glorious thing, served on a bed of beet confit with salmon roe and crßme fraiche. This one is definitely worth veering off the beaten path for.
